Transition (IM)possible - The Intertwined
When looking at art you tend to get asked about how that piece makes you feel or you just instantly have that connection to a certain piece that draws you in. This is the part that I’ve always struggled with as a developing artist finding that connection to art and being able to express my feelings towards it. This is why I chose to base this on weaving. Weaving is known as one of the oldest forms of art and craft, dating back to the Neolithic period. Since then, it has developed in many ways from being hand made to machine made and the symbolic meaning that it can express. The symbolic meaning of this can be recognising the health and wholeness of the weaver, connecting people and the world together and giving women the opportunity to make a living. What stood out to me was how weaving can be seen as a metaphor to life. Weaving the individual threads translates to weaving the universe and humans together, bounding us to earth with the threads. Through the process of weaving, it can give us a better understanding of the world and help us discover what our place is within it. This has been a self discovery for myself, understanding my place in the art world and how I am woven into it creating my personal connection to these three separate elements.
The picnic table has a textured back showing the contrast of colours that don’t necessarily go with each other but somehow do. These textures represents the weaver before being woven together in the universe. The weaved picnic table then represents the start of the process of understanding that we are woven and bound into the earth by the threads. The gallery features plywood and leather woven together representing that connection between humans and art coming together making a whole, having my Victorian tile designs printed onto the wood and the gold paint giving that sense of luxury. The curtains represents the end coming together finally understanding the world better and how we have become woven in to the universe.
